Who is Donna Britt?

Donna Britt's life has been a celebration of the Plan B. When her family could not match a grant towards a graduate degree in conducting at Northwestern, she thought she'd work in TV until she saved enough money to go. Life had other ideas and Plan B began. A life devoted to music veered dramatically into the wild hustle and bustle of a newsroom and a daily diet of new faces, names, and people, people, people. In her 36 years as a WAFB news anchor and reporter, Donna has covered every subject imaginable. Now ALS has forced a Plan B adjustment again, and Britt is on it. ALS has made reporting more difficult. A lot of her work is done by phone now, sending a videographer to gather the results. She, however, still enjoys writing and editing the video, turning stories for WAFB's vast readership on the WAFB News app and website. Now her focus must be on meeting every new challenge from ALS head on and mastering it. But a window has opened for her on the struggles of the disabled and the courageous determination of ALS patients who never know what will happen next.

What is ALS?

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. A-myo-trophic comes from the Greek language. "A" means no. "Myo" refers to muscle, and "Trophic" means nourishment – "No muscle nourishment." When a muscle has no nourishment, it "atrophies" or wastes away. "Lateral" identifies the areas in a person's spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells that signal and control the muscles are located. As this area degenerates, it leads to scarring or hardening ("sclerosis") in the region.

Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their demise. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, people may lose the ability to speak, eat, move and breathe. The motor nerves that are affected when you have ALS are the motor neurons that provide voluntary movements and muscle control. Examples of voluntary movements are making the effort to reach for a smart phone or step off a curb. These actions are controlled by the muscles in the arms and legs.

Chef John Folse, born in St. James Parish in 1946, learned early that the secrets of Cajun cooking lay in the unique ingredients of Louisiana’s swamp floor pantry. Folse seasoned these raw ingredients with his passion for Louisiana culture and cuisine, and from his cast iron pots emerged Chef John Folse & Company.

Folse opened Lafitte’s Landing Restaurant in 1978 when he was 32 years old. Bolstered by the success of his flagship establishment, Folse decided to take on the role of unofficial ambassador for Louisiana cookery, taking the regional cuisine worldwide.

In August 1996, Folse began broadcasting his radio cooking talk show, “Stirrin’ It Up.” In 2001, “Stirrin’ It Up” expanded to a television cooking segment during the 5 p.m. newscast on WAFB-TV Channel 9 in Baton Rouge, La.

More than thirty years of culinary excellence later, Folse is still adding ingredients to the corporate gumbo he calls Chef John Folse & Company, which is as diverse as the Louisiana landscape, and he would not want it any other way.

Sara Collins - Bio

Very few young music artists can boast of seeing their careers kick off with a performance at Carnegie Hall but such is the case for country music recording artist, Sara Collins. The Louisiana teenager was invited to take the legendary stage as part of the Honors Performance Series and she has since gone on to perform throughout her home state in venues such as the Texas Club and in Nashville at the Opry Mills Mall as well as the iconic Puckett’s Grocery in Leiper’s Fork, TN. Sara and her band recently performed in concert opening a show for Louisiana's own Hunter Hayes.

Sara, a vocalist and multi-talented instrumentalist, has just released debut album, entitled Lovesick Cinderella. The EP was produced by Michael Lattanzi and was recorded at Lattitude Studio South, which has recorded major artists like Jessica Simpson and Paula Abdul.
